Two men face charges in Guyana for staged $10M robbery
Two men have been charged in connection with a staged multi-million-dollar robbery after one of them fabricated a story about being held up by armed men while transporting money for a Rossignol jeweller.
Paramdeo Victor of Rossignol and Cornell Taylor of Ithaca, West Berbice, appeared before Magistrate Wilson at the Vigilance Magistrate's Court on charges of simple larceny. Victor faced an additional charge of making a false report.
The scheme unravelled when Victor reported to the Mahaica Police Station on November 6 that he had been robbed of $10,250,000 by three masked gunmen on Unity, Mahaica Old Road. He claimed the incident occurred while he was transporting cash from a Georgetown Cambio to a jeweller in Rosignol.
CID investigators became suspicious during questioning, leading Victor to confess that he had fabricated the robbery report in an attempt to steal the money.
A subsequent police investigation led to the recovery of $2 million hidden in Victor's vehicle and an additional $6 million concealed in a washing machine at his Rossignol residence.
The police later arrested Taylor, charged them both and brought them before the court yesterday.
The court did not require the defendants to enter a plea. The complainant requested no evidence be presented against the accused after being compensated the remaining sum of $2,150,000.
Both men were granted bail of $150,000 each, with the matter adjourned to December 13, 2024.
For the false report charge, Victor pleaded guilty and was fined $30,000 or he could face an alternative of 18 months imprisonment.
The police say legal advice is being sought from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
