Two staff members arrested after a prominent doctor found dead in Guyana
Prominent medical doctor, Colin Roach, was found dead in his Kingston, Guyana office last evening.
According to police, Roach was last seen alive by two of his employees after closing his International Medical Clinic office around 3 pm.
Cops reported one employee, who lives on the compound, retired to his quarters while the other left to run an errand.
Shortly after 8:15 pm, lights were observed in the doctor’s office, and that’s when a staff member tried to contact him to see if he was still on the compound.
When no answer was received, both staff members entered the office and found the 49-year-old’s body in a pool of blood.
Both staff members have been detained for questioning.
Cops are also looking for a man who was seen exiting Roach’s twice shortly after 8 pm.
The man left with Roach’s vehicle and was seen driving North along Duke Street.
Guyana’s Ministry of Health expressed shock at his tragic death and condolences to his three children and other family members.
“Guyana has lost one of its young but experienced doctors. Significantly, our country has lost one of its most experienced Biomedical pathologists. Dr Roach was part of the pioneering team that began revolutionizing laboratory science in Guyana and was a leading member of the team that began the transformation of manual procedures to automated technology,” the ministry said.
“When PEPFAR worked with the MOH to establish the National Public Health Reference Laboratory (NPHRL), Dr Roach was the person that led the technical team under the then Minister of Health that put together the plan.”
The ministry noted that Roach, one of only two local doctors authorized to conduct medical examinations on persons applying for their US immigrant visas, was in talks to help it enter “a new era of transformation for chemical pathology.”
Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Joseph Harmon has blasted the government for its failure to get a handle on crime.
“Citizens live in fear of motorcycle bandits that roam the city day and night. Citizens live in fear that confessed murderers will escape from custody, like Kalpildeo Gangadin a few days ago. How long can this go on? Is there no one competent who can take over the Ministry of Home Affairs?” he said.
“We reiterate our call for Minister Benn to go. Why? Because it feels like every week we’re mourning. Why? Because we have not seen any improvement. Why? Because Dr Colin Roach suffered a fate he didn’t deserve, and sadly no one will be surprised if next week we are mourning someone else. This violence must end. Benn must go. We continue to note the escalating crime situation.”
