USVI: 46-year-old woman shot dead in her home
Shock, horror, and dismay are emotions swirling around the Castle Coakley / Peter's Rest community in St Croix today following the untimely death of a 46-year-old woman.
Stacie Schjang was in her home yesterday morning when she was struck by a stray bullet that came through a window.
She is the territory's third murder victim.
The Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD) reported that the occupants of two vehicles were shooting at each other when Schjang was murdered.
The US Virgin Islands community members have sent condolences to Schjang's family and friends.
Former Governor Kenneth Mapp commented: "We are all devastated by this tragic loss. Stacie, with her radiant smile, was a warm and beautiful person. Just days ago, she and I were planning our activities for her next visit to central Florida just weeks away."
"I was so looking forward to spending time with my dear friend. I'm hurt, I'm angry, and I'm devastated. My deepest sympathies and prayers go out to Mike, Helen, Dave, Henry, Mickey, and the entire Schjang family. Stacie was a great part of my inner circle. I will miss our good times together."
A friend of Schjang stated: "It is numbing, the senseless loss of life, a person with a beautiful spirit and who was well-loved. My deepest condolences are to the entire family circle of Stacie Schjang and her friends."
A relative of Schjang commented on Facebook: "Ooh, my sweet Stacie Schjang. You loved a good storytime with me; I literally could have called you at any time to run long jokes. I promised you I was going to come to see you next month. I love you soooooo much big cuz. My heart is so shattered; this doesn't even make sense…Not my Stacie baby."
Police Commissioner Designee Ray A Martinez warned the USVI's criminal element that there would be no safe place for them to operate.
"We are coming to get you. We are going to increase our actions on the smallest of incidents to make sure you understand that this gun violence has to stop," he said in a statement last evening.
Martinez also announced a $25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
