USVI Governor seeks to extend SOE
A letter was sent to the US Virgin Islands Legislature yesterday to request that they extend the territory’s State of Emergency (SOE) for another 30 days.
Director of Communications at Government House, Richard Motta, told the media yesterday that the request by Governor Albert Bryan is a follow-up to the extension of a National State of Emergency granted to President Joe Biden last month.
“Here locally, we believe the end to the state of Emergency is insight. However, having the state of emergency in place allows us to keep our most effective tools in protecting our community against the spread of COVID-19,” Motta stated at yesterday’s weekly press briefing.
Having the SOE in place will allow the Bryan Administration to keep and enforce restrictions on hospital and nursing home visits, travel portals for entry, as well as, access to additional emergency medical personnel.
The federal government will also be required to fund the community vaccination centers and pay overtime for national guard members and emergency frontline medical workers.
The SOE was declared in 2020 when the first COVID-19 cases were detected on the USVI.
