USVI: One dead as violence mars St Thomas Carnival
This weekend’s Carnival festivities on St Thomas, US Virgin Islands, were briefly disrupted by a stabbing and shooting.
According to the Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD), gunshots were heard in the area of Norre Gade, in the vicinity of the Frederick Lutheran Church, at approximately 8:37 pm on April 29.
Cops responded and found the lifeless body of 54-year-old Alrick Thomas.
This was the 15th murder on the territory this year.
Police said their swift response in the matter led to the arrest of 21-year-old Dion Johnson in connection with Thomas’ death.
Johnson has been charged with murder, and his bail was set at $1 million.
He was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending his advice of a rights hearing.
A few hours later, a man was stabbed inside the Carnival Village.
Police said the victim was attacked by a man he knew.
He was taken to the Schneider Regional Medical Centre (SRMC) for evaluation and treatment.
“The victim sustained three puncture wounds from the assault; one to the left chest area and two to the stomach,” VIPD said.
Police have asked public members to assist with their investigation into the stabbing.
