Woman charged with burning a plaza to conceal a robbery
A woman allegedly set a fire that destroyed a plaza that housed three businesses in an attempt to conceal a theft, prosecutors allege.
Prosecutors on Friday accused alleged arsonist Peaches Hanna, 21, of Mason’s Bay, Acklins, and Alexis Williams, a 28-year-old sales clerk at 700 Wines and Spirits, of conspiracy to commit arson and theft.
Hanna is charged as an accessory after the fact after she allegedly set the fire in a bid to cover up Williams’ theft.
Prosecutors allege that Williams stole $41,254.29 from the liquor store between April 8, 2021, and May 20, 2021. Williams and Hanna face charges of receiving after police allegedly recovered $22,500 of the stolen money.
Prosecutors say that Hanna torched the plaza that housed 700 Wines and Spirits, the National Insurance Board and McKinney’s Grocery Store. The fire caused $500,000 in damages to the building.
Hanna is accused of destroying a 2016 Toyota Hilux truck, worth $47,995, the property of NIB, and a 2010 Nissan Caravan, worth $8,000, the property of Jacqueline Simms.
Also, she’s accused of damaging $159,168 in combined inventory from 700 Wines and Spirits and McKinney’s Grocery Store.
She’s further accused of destroying equipment belonging to the National Insurance Board, valued at $35,609.90.
The pair was not required to enter pleas to the charges before Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt and was denied bail. They can, however, seek bail in the Supreme Court.
Caleb Dorsett represented Hanna, and Alex Morley appeared for Williams.
Sergeant 3605 Samantha Miah prosecuted.
They return to court on August 25.
