Bahamian Olympian murdered after nightclub brawl
The Bahamian track and field community is mourning following the murder of Olympian Shavez Hart on Saturday.
According to the Royal Bahamas Police, Hart, 29, was at a nightclub in Mount Hope, North Abaco, shortly after 2 am when he and his friends got into an argument with another group.
A fight took place, and one of the men from the opposing group left and later returned with a firearm and shot Hart multiple times.
Hart was transported to the Marsh Harbour Clinic, where he was pronounced dead.
Chief Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings told the media that a suspect was arrested shortly after the incident.
Hart represented The Bahamas in the 200 metres at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil. Earlier that year, he won his first global medal for the Bahamas—a silver in the four × 400 m relay at the 2016 World Indoor Championships in Portland, Oregon, USA.
Condolences have poured in for Hart’s family and friends.
Prime Minister Philip Davis tweeted: “On behalf of my family and the people of The Bahamas, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family of Shavez Hart. As a country, we’ve been blessed to have had an amazing athlete carry our flag worldwide. And I will keep the family of Shavez in our thoughts and prayers.”
In a statement, Sports Minister Mario Bowleg said: “It is with great sadness I join the sporting fraternity in expressing heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Shavez Hart. As Minister, I pray for healing and comfort during this difficult time.”
“I want to also extend my heartfelt condolences to the executive branch of the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations (BAAA), all other members of the organisation, and persons within his sporting community.”
