Barbados Government Reaffirms Commitment To Workplace Safety & Health
Barbados Government is unwavering in its commitment to fostering a safe and healthy work environment.
Minister of Labour, Social Security and Third Sector Colin Jordan highlighted the importance of prioritising employee well-being and implementing robust safety measures in workplaces across the island.
Mr Jordan was speaking during the opening ceremony for the launch of Occupational Safety and Health Week, on Monday, at the Accra Beach Hotel & Spa, Rockley, Christ Church. This year’s theme is Safety and Health, a Fundamental Principle and Right at Work.
Minister Jordan emphasised the need for open communication and workplace exchange. “People have to feel free to…say what they’re thinking. And if we talk about mental health, we can have all the counsellors and psychologists we want, but if people don’t feel free to share respectfully, then all of that will be of very little effect,” he stated.
Recognising the fundamental significance of safety, health, and well-being, he noted that persons working in those areas were necessary. “It is the core of the development of organisations, whether businesses or not; it is at the core of the development of societies and economies,” the Labour Minister indicated.
Safety committees and safety delegates were highlighted as crucial, and he shared the employers’ responsibility for workplace safety. “This means that employers have a fiduciary responsibility to their workers and those who enter their workplaces and spaces in the matter of safety,” Mr Jordan stated.
Those attending the launch included Chief Labour Officer Claudette Hope-Greenidge, Executive Director of the Barbados Employers’ Confederation Sheena Mayers-Granville, and General Secretary of the Barbados Workers’ Union Toni Moore.
