Dry season woes: St Kitts rations water due to drought conditions
A lack of rainfall in St Kitts has forced the water services department to implement a rationing water schedule for the island.
The St Kitts Water Service Department says a rationing water schedule has been implemented whereby water will be closed off between 9 pm and 5 am daily.
Residents have been encouraged to store water to meet their needs during the interruptions in the public supply.
The Department explains this action which affects all water consumers in St Kitts, is a result of reduced rainfall, which means there is less water to distribute.
It states, based on rainfall data received from the Meteorological Services, the accumulated rainfall up to March 31, 2023, was 200 millimetres, less than 50 per cent of what was received for the same period in 2022.
All consumers in St Kitts must practice conservation measures to minimise the duration of water interruptions.
- Consumers are also strongly encouraged to:
- Check their premises for leaks and have them repaired immediately.
- Report any suspected leaks to the Water Services Department at 465-8000.
- Refrain from watering lawns.
- Use a bucket when washing vehicles and buildings.
The Water Services Department notes it is boostingour water production capacity to enable a 24-hour supply even during the annual Dry Season.
