Guyana: Single mom receives new home for Christmas
A single mother of six in Guyana received today's ultimate Christmas gift, a fully furnished home.
Anita Lloyd and her family received the home, which is located in Hampshire, Corentyne, from Guyanese President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali.
Lloyd received the house through the president’s Men on Mission (MoM) programme after members of civil society highlighted their plight.
The family lived in squalor on land reserved for the Guyana Sugar Corporation.
At the handover ceremony, Ali urged Lloyd and her family to take care of their new home.
“We are very pleased this morning that we can share this glorious moment with you and your six children. We hope that you know that the community is standing by you. You have a responsibility to the community and an even greater responsibility to your children,” the president stated.
Ali highlighted that the gift to Lloyd came with the conditions that she maintains a regular job and that her children attend school.
The president said it’s up to the community and regional government representatives to ensure Llyod holds up her end of the contract.
Ali encouraged the mom to ensure her children receive a proper education since it has “the power to change the circumstances of families.”
Lloyd thanked the president and the MoM team for the new home.
Fighting back tears, Llyod promised to do her best to uphold the contract.
The Lloyds aren’t the only family that will receive an improved dwelling as Ali said, more than 350 families have been identified for home improvement grants and new houses.
Ali praised the MoM team, which is led by the chief of defence staff, for the work they are doing silently.
He said next year, MoM will expand their operations and will be heading into Guyanese schools.
