High turnout of teachers and students in Guyana as schools re-open
Students and teachers turned out in their numbers yesterday in Guyana for the first day of in-person classes in more than a year.
The Education Ministry said data received from 51 per cent of the nursery and primary schools showed 70 percent of nursery pupils attended school and 95 percent of teachers. At the primary level, 92 percent of teachers and 65 percent of students were present.
Ten schools were unable to reopen on Monday since many teachers tested positive for COVID-19.
Education Minister Priya Manickchand was pleased with the turnout.
“We gave parents the option of not bringing their children. Usually, education is compulsory from nursery to secondary…we are not be checking on parents who did not bring their children. The parents are allowed to teach their children at home using all of the ministry’s resources which we have made available on zero-rated websites,” Manickchand said.
She called on parents and teachers to ensure that children become mindful of the COVID-19 guideline when they attend classes.
The minister has urged parents whose children are not vaccinated against the virus to educate themselves about the safety and effectiveness of the vaccines and do what is right for the child.
Students will be able to access classes both in-person and digitally.
A diagnostic assessment has begun across Guyana, and the results will inform how and what teachers will teach in the coming weeks.
During the first half of this academic year, students are expected to be taught the topics they missed last year before moving onto another grade.
