Hundreds attend Puerto Rican festival on Coney Island Broadwalk
The third annual Knickerbocker Puerto Rican Parade was held Sunday.
The parade, organized by Assemblywoman Maritz Davila, started at Grove Street and ended on Jefferson Street.
Assemblywoman Davila told News 12 she’s happy the parade was possible after the difficult year caused by the pandemic.
“We are Puerto Ricans,” said Assemblywoman Davila. “We're very proud; we want to celebrate. This is our day."
Organizers held a moment of silence honouring those from the community who have died from COVID-19 at the event's start.
Hundreds of people attended the Puerto Rican festival Sunday on the Coney Island Boardwalk.
The event happened on West Eighth Street near the New York Aquarium.
The event featured salsa dancing, music and a sea of Puerto Rican flags.
Earlier today, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo delivered remarks by video at the 2021 Puerto Rican Day Parade.
Hello. I'm Governor Andrew Cuomo, and I'm honoured to join you virtually for the 64th Annual Puerto Rican Day Parade. I'm even more excited that next year's parade we'll all be together again and we can enjoy each other's company.
But this is a moment to celebrate Puerto Rico and the vibrant and dynamic Puerto Rican community here in New York.
This has been a tough year for the people of New York and the people of Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico has endured much pain for the past few years, but New Yorkers have always been there to help Puerto Rico in any way that we can, and we should be proud of that.
One of the bright spots this year has been our completion and opening of the magnificent Hurricane Maria Memorial, located in Battery Park City in sight of the Statue of Liberty. I'm very grateful to all the commission members for their hard work and to the architect Segundo Cardona and artist Antonio Martorell, both from Puerto Rico, who created an inspiring monument. It is a beautiful and fitting tribute to the lives lost in Hurricane Maria. Still, it will also stand as an international symbol of the resilience of the Puerto Rican people and the love and respect they have from all New Yorkers.
Somos más que amigos. Somos familia. Somos uno. Thank you all.
