Hurricane red alert discontinued in Belize
The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) in Belize has given the all-clear for persons to exit their homes and shelters following the passage of Hurricane Lisa.
Despite the all-clear, NEMO is still advising Belizeans to be cautious.
“Residents in affected areas are strongly advised to remain in their homes as there is significant damage, including dangerous debris, leaning lampposts and downed electrical lines which pose a hazard to life. Furthermore, to restore utilities quickly and efficiently, it is important that utility crews can work unimpeded by unnecessary traffic,” the agency said.
A damage assessment is currently underway across the country.
Lisa, now a tropical depression, impacted Belize last evening as a category-one hurricane.
The storm brought a dangerous surge that flooded Belize City and other coastal communities.
Strong winds from the hurricane tore rooves from homes and downed power lines across the country.
Clean up of affected communities has already begun.
The Belize City Council said the Belize Waste Control would assist its team members in cleaning up storm-ravaged communities into the weekend.
