Jamaica Wins Seats on UNESCO Committees, Boosting Cultural Influence
Jamaica's Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange, announced on November 28, 2023, that Jamaica has been elected to three important UNESCO committees, including the powerful World Heritage Committee. This marks a significant achievement for Jamaica, as it will give the country a greater voice in international discussions on culture and heritage. The World Heritage Committee is responsible for implementing the World Heritage Convention, which defines the use of the World Heritage Fund and allocates financial assistance upon requests from States Parties. It has the final say on whether a property is inscribed on the World Heritage List. Jamaica's membership on the committee will run until 2027.
The other two UNESCO committees to which Jamaica has been elected are the Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission. These committees are responsible for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage and promoting international cooperation in marine science, respectively. Jamaica's election to these committees is a testament to the country's rich cultural heritage and its commitment to sustainable development. Jamaica is home to a number of World Heritage Sites, including the Blue and John Crow Mountains and the Port Royal Historic Site. The country is also a member of the Alliance of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), which works to promote the interests of SIDS on the international stage. Jamaica's membership on these committees will provide the country with an opportunity to share its expertise and experience with other countries. It will also allow Jamaica to advocate for the interests of SIDS and to promote sustainable development. Overall, Jamaica's election to these committees is a positive development for the country. It will give Jamaica a greater voice in international discussions on culture and heritage, and it will help to promote sustainable development in the country and around the world.
