Leader of the SKNLP reprimanded for peaceful protest against Minister Grant
Leader of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP), Dr Terrance Drew, took to the streets on January 12 in protest on behalf of the compliance officers that were allegedly assaulted by the Minister of Tourism, Transport, and Posts, Hon. On January 8, 2022, Lindsay Grant carried out their duties to ensure that all events were adhering to the COVID-19 protocols.
The SKNLP Leader was seen standing peacefully in protest outside the Government Headquarters with a placard that read, “Respect the Rule of Law! Resign Now Mr Grant! Guilty of Lawless Conduct! Guilty of Stealing! Leave Office Now!”. Dr Drew, who demonstrated his democratic right, was later approached by a police officer dressed in full combat gear and asked to leave the premises.
The SKNLP recently issued a press release describing Minister Grant’s behaviour as “simply appalling” and called for the Prime Minister to “enforce discipline within his cabinet for this unforgivable breach of the law and the trust and confidence of the people who Minister Grant is called to serve and obey.” The Federation has been experiencing an alarming increase in COVID-19 cases since its carnival season. The NEOC (COVID-19) Task Force has been strictly enforcing the protocols as approved by the federal cabinet.
Allegedly, Superintendent Cromwell Henry, a member of the NEOC Task Force, arrived on the scene after the WPC called him to assist her. Minister Grant persisted with his disrespectful behaviour and had to be pulled away from the scene.
The most recent COVID-19 Situation Report showed that within the last 24 hours, there had been 145 additional confirmed cases, bringing the total number of active cases to 1,204 and total overall cases to 4,484. There have been 28 deaths thus far. The Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis has a population of just over 50,000.
