Newcastle midfielder Joelinton ruled out for six weeks with a thigh injury
The 27-year-old injured his quad during the Magpies' 3-0 FA Cup win against Sunderland on Saturday.
The Brazil international has made 23 appearances this season, scoring three goals and making four assists.
On Friday, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said: "We have had to try and pick him up. He is our midfield driving force, which is a big blow."
Newcastle face Manchester City in the Premier League at St James' Park at 17:30 GMT on Saturday.
Howe's squad has been plagued with injuries so far this season, with Joelinton becoming the 11th player to have an extended spell on the sidelines.
"[Joelinton] is such an important player. He has a problem with his tendon in his quad," said Howe.
"He is very disappointed, he wants to play and do well."
Despite Newcastle's resources being stretched, Howe said it is unlikely the club will make any big moves in the January transfer window.
"We're not shutting the door on everything, but certainly as I sit here now, no, we're not going to bring anyone in," he said.
