Nigerian man arrested in St Maarten for allegedly smuggling cocaine
A Nigerian man was arrested in St Maarten for allegedly transporting cocaine into the country.
According to the Customs Department, the 30-year-old, who was travelling on a St Kitts and Nevis passport, was checked by officers at the Princess Juliana International Airport after he deplaned from a Caribbean Airlines from Jamaica.
“While screening the passengers' luggage from that flight with X-Ray equipment, the officers noticed an abnormal image on the screen. During the physical inspection of the luggage, the officers encountered four metal objects. The officers drilled a hole in one of the metal objects and found that it was filled with a white substance they recognised as pure cocaine,” the department said.
“All four objects were subsequently cut opened and found to contain cocaine, for a total of 1.631 kilograms. The contraband and the suspect's luggage were confiscated”.
The man was questioned and remains in custody as the investigation continues.
