NYC men convicted of murdering Guyanese national
Shakim Allen and Dreshaun Smith have been convicted of murdering a Guyanese man visiting relatives in New York City.
Rocky Kalisaran,31, was shot in the chest, lower torso, and leg by Smith on January 2, 2017, as he and his younger brother wrestled with Allen as he tried to rob them.
According to evidence presented in court, Allen approached then-24-year-old Sonny Kalisaran with a gun and attempted to rob him as he walked on 124th Street and Liberty Avenue.
On noticing the robbery, Rocky ran to his brother’s aid. Both men fled, but Allen pursued them.
The Kalisaran brothers fought with Allen and wounded him.
As the trio fought, they were approached by Smith, who shot the brothers multiple times.
Rocky was taken to the hospital, where he died.
Allen, 29, of Merrick Avenue, and Smith, 29, of 160th Street, in Jamaica, Queens, were convicted by a jury in Queens Supreme Court of murder in the second degree, attempted murder in the second degree, assault in the first degree, robbery in the first degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree and tampering with physical evidence.
Allen was additionally convicted of criminal possession of the stolen property in the fourth degree, while Smith was additionally convicted of arson in the third degree.
Following the convictions, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said: “This family has experienced tremendous grief, and I hope this conviction provides them a measure of closure.”
Allen and Smith face possible sentences of more than 50 years to life in prison by Queens Supreme Court Justice Ira Margulis on April 25.
