Roosevelt Skerrit sworn in as Prime Minister of Dominica
The political leader of the Dominica Labour Party (DLP), Roosevelt Skerrit, was sworn in as Prime Minister of Dominica after his party emerged victorious in the December 6, 2022, General Election.
President of Dominica Charles Savarin, in his congratulations to Skerrit, says he believes he will be the only prime minister in the Caribbean in history to serve six consecutive terms as prime minister and to have led his party to five successive general election victories.
President Savarin, in his speech, notes there was no repetition of the regrettable incidents that occurred in the lead-up up to the 2019 poll nor violence on election day itself. The President congratulated all stakeholders and the people of Dominica for the peaceful conduct of the elections and for exercising their right to vote for the candidates of their choice.
The President of Dominica says he is aware that the issue of electoral reform is still a matter which is unresolved and looks forward to the report of Sir Dennis Byron on this matter.
He also welcomes the assurance the Prime Minister gave after the results of the elections last night that he would ensure all stakeholders would be involved in consultations to review the report and recommendations from Sir Dennis, including the Commonwealth Secretariat and OAS, once the acceptable draft legislation is agreed upon, a bill considered before parliament.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Skerrit, after he took his oath of office, says the DLP was rewarded a resounding victory in the December 6 elections, which he is sure shall be deemed credible, free and fair, reflecting the will of the people of Dominica.
