US Virgin Islands under flash flood alert
The US National Weather Service in San Juan, Puerto Rico, has issued a Flash Flood Warning for the US Virgin Islands due to heavy rainfall from a tropical wave.
Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated thunderstorms produce heavy rainfall between one and five inches.
The forecast for heavy rainfall remains at 7 pm, and the territory is expected to experience inclement weather conditions until Friday.
Governor Albert Bryan has ordered that all government offices close at 3 pm.
“While rain is expected to continue through Friday, October 28, a determination on the status of [Government of the Virgin Islands] operations will be made Thursday morning, October 27,” a statement from Government House said.
The Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency (VITEMA) advises motorists to stay off the roads tonight until road conditions can be assessed following the forecasted rain event.
The Department of Public Works said motorists should exercise caution while driving and avoid areas of standing water, particularly around construction areas and road repair sites.
