USVI: DLCA export of water from St Croix during SoE
The US Virgin Islands Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs (DLCA) has announced a price freeze on bottled water and all items necessary for water production.
The price restriction went into effect in October.
The DLCA is also restricting the export and sale of bottled water, water haulers, filters, and filtering systems outside of the District of St Croix.
Residents of St Croix currently cannot drink water supplied by the DLCA after tests found it contained high levels of lead and copper.
Governor Albert Bryan has declared a state of emergency on the island.
The measure, which was issued by DLCA Commissioner Nominee Nathalie Hodge, is meant to protect the public's welfare during the emergency period and to prevent price gouging.
“All merchants are forbidden from altering the ordinary delivery methods, terms, discounts, concessions, or payment methods for all supplies and services referenced above. The sale price of all such items and services shall not be higher than the fixed price. All merchants are also forbidden from refusing to accept Virgin Islands Government Vouchers during the Emergency period,” DLCA said in a statement.
“These measures are being instituted to protect the public’s welfare during the emergency period and to prevent speculative practices related to bottled water, water haulers, filters, and filtering systems which are essential during the recovery period.”
Consumers can report businesses that don’t adhere to the rules via the DLCA Scam Line at 340-727-SCAM (7226).
