Venezuela rejects CARICOM's view on ICJ ruling
The Bolivarian Government of Venezuela has categorically rejected the communique issued by the Secretariat of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) on the pronouncement of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding what Venezuelan terms as the unusual request for provisional measures presented by the Government of Guyana against their December 3 consultative referendum.
The ICJ issued the following provisional measures:
- Pending a final decision in the case, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela shall refrain from taking any action which would modify the situation that currently prevails in the territory in dispute whereby the Cooperative Republic of Guyana administers and exercises control over that area.
- Both parties shall refrain from any action which might aggravate or extend the dispute before the court or make it more challenging to resolve.
In a statement on Friday, CARICOM noted that the International Court of Justice ordered Venezuela not to take any action to challenge, disrupt or interfere with Guyana’s longstanding control and administration of the Essequibo Region, which constitutes more than two-thirds of Guyana’s land territory until the Court has issued its final Judgment on which State enjoys sovereignty over that territory.
CARICOM said it expected Venezuela to uphold the ICJ’s Order of December 1, 2023 and also insisted that Venezuela complies with international law in all respects and the Charter of the United Nations, and, in this connection, called on it to take no actions in violation of them.
However, Venezuela is accusing CARICOM of ignoring the fact that the International Court of Justice unanimously rejected Guyana’s attempt to limit the political rights of Venezuelans and prevent the holding of the referendum called by the National Assembly of Venezuela.
The Government of Venezuela said: “It is astonishing that the aforementioned Secretariat juggles to avoid referring to the Court’s clear call to the government of Guyana to cease the deliberate actions that aggravate the situation, among which we can mention the involvement of the United State Southern Command and the granting of concessions in a yet to be demarcated maritime area, which has generated a situation that threatens the peace and stability of the Caribbean region.”
The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, in the statement, is calling on CARICOM partner countries to return to good judgment and objectivity.
