Former government minister faces an arrest warrant in Belize
Police have issued a warrant for the arrest of former works minister Rene Montero Sr, alleging wrongdoing. At the same time, he served in the previous United Democratic Party (UDP) government that lost the general elections last year.
According to the police, a warrant has also been issued for another person, identified as George Andrews, and reported to have been employed at the Works Unit while Senior served as minister.
The warrants allege that Montero and Andrews “willfully abused their authority to the injury of the public between April fourteenth, 2016 and November twelfth, 2020.”
The two are accused of “Willful Oppression, which contravenes Sections 284 and 309 of the Criminal Code, Chapter 101 of the Laws of Belize.
But a statement from the law firm, Elrington, and Compan, notes that their client, Rene Montero Senior, is out of the country getting medical treatment. No one from his family has been contacted, nor have police visited his residence.
The statement said that the warrant is politically motivated and attempts to distract Belizeans from larger issues facing the country.
