St Kitts & Nevis backs regional efforts to stop sargassum influx
St Kitts and Nevis expressed its support for regional efforts to find a solution to the influx of sargassum seaweed on our beaches.
Saint Kitts and Nevis’ Ambassador to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Larry Vaughan, told representatives at the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) Summit in Guatemala that it was vital that a solution to the seaweed invasion is found.
“The presence of the sargassum seaweed at this time creates a negative visitor experience, and it threatens the livelihoods of our small subsistence fisherfolk. Saint Kitts and Nevis pledges to redouble its efforts to find and support sustainable solutions to this threat,” he stated.
“Plans for early warning systems are welcomed and any further innovative effort to harvest and utilise sargassum for sustainable economic activity is also welcomed by the government and people of Saint Kitts and Nevis.”
A large plume of sargassum seaweed is currently affecting coastlines of the Caribbean, Central America and the southern United States of America.
One of the dangers posed by the sargassum is the hydrogen sulphide and ammonia fumes that it emits when it decays on shore.
